Monthly puppy naming time!!! You have a litter of fluffy short-legged corgis wiggling and wagging in your lap! Corgis were bred to herd sheep and cattle. They have very sturdy bodies on very short legs, which makes them look both a bit disproportionate and adorable at the same time. You job is to come up with names for the 4 puppies- 2 girls and 2 boys. But not just any names. The names need to reflect something small and sturdy (strong and durable). How about Penny for instance. It is a small thing but can handle a lot of tossing into fountains and such without being damaged. Your turn! What was your favorite name?

Time to create a character. Let me give you a bit of information about her. She owns a florist shop, but she is known for creating new and beautiful colors of daisies. She recently came up with a green variety that is getting a lot of attention. Tell me a bit about her in 4 to 8 sentences. What is her name? Why does she like flowers? What is it about daisies in particular that fascinates her? I think she is a bright and joyous person and is attracted to the vibrant colors. What do you think?

The florist your met yesterday… she has a big problem! The town she lives in has a big celebration for St. Patrick’s Day. People come from all over to join in the fun. The town hired her to grow 8,000 of her green daisies. They wanted some for everyone to pin one on their shirts and jackets. For months she has been cultivating and caring for all these flowers. BUT THEN- a sudden heavy snowstorm hit! It dumped 18 inches of snow and her greenhouse with the green daises collapsed! In just a few weeks, it will be St. Patrick’s Day! She has NO GREEN DAISIES! But she does have enough orange daisies. That greenhouse wasn’t damaged. How can she make the orange daisies work for St Patrick’s Day?!

You just discovered a new fruit! The bad news is you were marooned on an uninhabited island for a week! But the good news is, while you were there, you discovered the new fruit! When, you were rescued, you decided to take the seeds of this fruit home so you could grow a bunch of it. You are planning on selling some of the seedlings, but you need to explain to other people just what this fruit is like. What does the fruit look like? How would you describe its taste? What did you decide to name it? Are there any other details you think people should know? My fruit has an earthy chocolatey flavor…because who couldn’t use more chocolate… Let me know what you called you fruit in the comments!

If you are new to this creative writing series, welcome! I will explain what the whole journal entry thing is all about The last weekday of each month, is a time to look back over the month, but not from your point of view! You first need to choose something that will write this and all the remaining journal entries for the year. It may be your cat. It may be a tree. It may even be a rock. Simply choose a character to follow along the year’s journey. Now, look back over February and think about some unique things this particular month held. Things like Valentine’s Day, or maybe a family member’s birthday. The things you choose to focus on will depend on your character. Next, sum up your character’s February activities or outlooks in 3-10 sentences. My puppies, Benzi and Vislet, loved the fact that family came over for a birthday party. More people means more pets, after all…. and maybe some dropped food…
